About UC Davis

The University of California at Davis is the branch of the University of California system that focuses on farming, livestock, viticulture, and other agricultural issues, as well as subjects like geology that deal with the land. While other University of California campuses have earth science and nutrition-type courses, UC Davis was started in 1908 specifically as a university farm that was supposed to be used for agricultural research. The university was originally an offshoot of the University of California at Berkeley, and it became a separate university within the University of California system in 1959. After its establishment as a general university, UC Davis began opening general departments in subjects other than agriculture, such as drama.

The university was actually shut down during World War II when it became a training base for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, but classes resumed after the war, with a new veterinary school forming in 1946. Departments continued to form after the 1959 breakaway, with a law school, ethnic studies, and other divisions rapidly gaining students. Recent years have seen such accomplishments for UC Davis such as having the highest amount of agricultural research funding in the United States, developing the ability to research fuel cell technology in cars, developing a feline AIDS vaccine, and discovering that chocolate can have a beneficial effect on heart function. Also, they have opened centers for research in lighting technology, environmental sciences, AIDS research, horse therapy, and avian flu research.

The UC Davis central campus is located on the northwest side of Interstate 80 in the city of Davis, and its western edge is bordered by Highway 113. The campus does offer tours that require a week's advance notice. Parking structures and lots dot the campus, but if classes are in session, visitors could face competition from students for parking.
